IT asset management (ITAM), when done right, can work wonders for your company. But while it can help save time and money as it is, it can be taken to the next level and do even more for your company. In a post at his site, Joe the IT Guy gives five tips for better ITAM metrics:

Adapting to ITAM Metrics

Reporting is incredibly important to your organization, so naturally you wouldn’t want to bury all that important stuff under excessive graphs and charts. Get the key information to your stakeholders that will help them out the most, focusing on factors of scale, results, financials, compliance, and effectiveness and efficiency requirements being met.

These metrics can further be utilized in ways that will aid in improvement strategies and future ITAM. Joe highlights some ways metrics can be used:

  • Gain buy-in from senior management and business stakeholders
  • Promote your ITAM activities, showcasing wins and positive results
  • Monitor process performance
  • Act as a baseline to measure improvement, or deterioration, over time
  • Support audit activity
  • Account for resource use and justify future scalability
  • Provide greater transparency into spend and value for both IT and the business
  • Compare your organization against industry best practice and benchmarks
  • Act as a source of support for future decision making

ITAM must align with the rest of your business, and one way to get started on that is with a mission statement. It doesn’t need to be really detailed or special–just something that encompasses what ITAM is trying to do. You can then go about building critical success factors (CSFs) and key performance indicators (KPIs). CSFs examine what it takes to achieve the mission statement, and KPIs are used to measure progress toward CSFs. All CSFs, KPIs, and other supporting metrics should ultimately connect back to the goals of ITAM.
